Feeding Therapy In Houston

A Neuro-Based Approach to Feeding

Eating and swallowing require coordination between the brain, cranial nerves, muscles of the face and mouth, breathing, posture, sensory processing, and motor control. When one or more of these systems is not working efficiently, mealtimes can become challenging.

By intentionally addressing both neurological and physical foundations, we aim to help children make meaningful progress toward safer and more successful feeding.

During assessment and treatment, we may examine:

  • Oral motor strength and coordination
  • Swallowing safety and efficiency
  • Cranial nerve function
  • Primitive reflex integration and neurological development
  • Sensory processing and food acceptance
  • Postural stability and body awareness
  • Mealtime behaviors and learned feeding patterns
  • Previous medical or feeding experiences that may contribute to feeding anxiety or avoidance

Specialized Feeding Therapy Techniques

Treatment plans are uniquely curated based on each child’s needs and may incorporate:

  • Advanced oral motor therapy
  • Neurodevelopmental approaches to feeding
  • Sensory-based feeding interventions
  • SOS Approach to Feeding principles
  • Sensory Point Kinesiology Taping (KT Taping) for oral motor support
  • Therapeutic strategies to improve oral awareness, coordination, and swallowing function
  • Family education and home program development

NMES in Feeding Therapy

When clinically appropriate, AmpCare may be incorporated into treatment. AmpCare uses gentle neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to help activate and strengthen the muscles involved in swallowing. This specialized intervention can be used alongside traditional therapy techniques to support improved swallowing function.
